"Israel used to distinguish itself by demanding that others recognize its right to exist. This is very peculiar. No other country asks about whether it has a right to exist. If it does exist, it exists. That's enough.
But what this question really meant was, if you agree Israel has the right to exist you are implicitly agreeing that the Palestinians had no right to exist, and the only state that could exist in historic Palestine was Israel. That was the implication. So, this was a way of obliquely denying Palestinian self-determination.
Over the last 10 months, the question "Does Israel have a right to exist?" has changed to "Does Israel deserve to exist?" given the way it is behaving. And I think, now, with these assassinations, that question has evolved futher. And that is, "Should the world tolerate the existence of Israel?", a state that knows of no crime that it is not prepared to commit, no international law that it is not prepared to break, or no depraved action it is unwilling to authorize."
