The Players
The Kurds are militarily represented by the YPG. Their political aim is the establishment of a Kurdish state, Kurdistan, which would require the surrender of territory by Türkiye, Syria, Iraq and Iran. The Kurds will accept whatever assistance they are offered by anyone towards this aim. Their primary enemy is Türkiye, from which they desire a serious amount of territory and against which they have been fighting political and asymmetric battles for generations. During the first phase of the Syrian Dirty War, the Kurds were primarily supported by the US, who still provide protection with their illegal occupation of northeastern Syria. The Kurds' second enemy are jihadist, Takfiri, Sunni extremists. They fought with the US to defeat ISIS in Iraq and against Takfirs in Syria.
The Kurds are not stupid. When Trump threatened to withdraw from Syria they understood the folly of depending on the US. This led them to re-establish connections with the Syrian government.
The nation of the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR) is militarily represented by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA). The territory of Syria is one of the most ancient settled lands. Its current President is the son of its previous President. Before the Syrian Dirty War (SDW) it, like Libya, was one of the wealthiest nations in its region, with excellent healthcare and education systems. Syria is particularly notable for its secular society which supports a wide range of diverse religious communities. The SAR has a mutual defence treaty with Iran. It agreed to play no direct military role in the Axis of Resistance response to the Zionist genocide in Gaza, but instead to serve as a conduit from Iran and Iraq to Lebanon and Gaza, and a relatively safe location. Unbeknownst to many, the Axis of Resistance produces significant quantities of weaponry in Syria.
Türkiye is the successor state of the Ottoman Empire which chose to support Germany in its attempt to create an empire in the very late 19th century. That project was symbolized by the Berlin to Baghdad railway. The Ottoman Empire, or what remained of it, sided with Germany in WWI and had its territory parceled up and redistributed by the victorious European powers. Its current president Erdogan is a latter day Sultan who desires to recreate the glory of the Ottomans. One of his perennial problems is the Kurds’ use of force to obtain their political aims. His current solution to this problem is to annex northern Syria, particularly the northeast, where Syria's oil and rich farmlands are located. The political front for the annexation is to create a "buffer zone". Türkiye is also a NATO member and hosts a large, advanced US airfield and base at Incirlik. Türkiye has been courting the SCO and BRICS, playing off all sides in the time honored tradition of rule from Anatolia or Constantinople [renamed Istanbul by Memet II in 1453].
Iran is the name of the modern state of the ancient regional power of southwest Asia, Persia. Iran is currently allied with the returning powers of Asia, Russia and China, via both BRICS and the SCO. It understands that one of its biggest problems in the region is the Western satellite, colonial state of Israel. During the extended folly of the US invasion and occupation of Iraq from 2003, it formed the Axis of Resistance. The Axis is composed of Iran's expeditionary military, the Iranian Republican Guard Corps (IRGC), Hezbollah, various Iraqi (dominantly Shia) Popular Mobilization Units (PMUs), Ansar Allah in Yemen, and nominally the SAA.
Israel is the Zionist, conniving, immoral, US armed and funded, genocidal, European settler colonial state which runs political influence operations throughout Europe and the US known collectively as the "Israeli Lobby".
The US is the failing hegemon, a gorilla, variously influenced by the British and Zionists during its 35 year hegemony.
Russia is a resurgent Asian power. It has a warm water naval port at Tartus, and a military airfield at Khmeimim, Syria. The Soviet Russian state supported Syria, and other Arab nationalist leaders like Egypt’s Nasser, during the Cold War.
Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) is a Sunni extremist mercenary force. It contains few Syrians. The Syrian National Army (SNA) is a Western re-brand of the "Free Syrian Army", another Sunni extremist mercenary force. It's members are also largely non-Syrian. These are zealous religious, mercenary proxy forces. They do not abide by the laws of war, and are often labeled as terrorists. They do not distinguish between civilian and military, but between those who support their brutal version of Islamic rule and everybody else who are their enemies. Their version of “Sharia Law” is not supported by Islamic scholars. They are not Muslims but lawless, murderous religious zealots.
HTS is largely under Turkish military intelligence control. Both have been armed and trained by NATO military intelligence organisations and cut outs, including Ukraine's military intelligence, the GUR. The GUR is an asset of the CIA and MI-6.
The Fog of War
Vanessa Beeley, daughter of a former UK ambassador to Syria, long term resident of Damascus, war reporter and geopolitical analyst, related to Christian, host of The Last American Vagabond, that the best lens through which to view the first phase of SDW 2.0 is the White Helmets. That British military funded and controlled group was MI-6's contribution to to SDW 1.0.
Running an operation of 15 000 militants requires months of planning. The disinformation operation is an important part of that planning. The US legacy media, and military intelligence disinformation operative (troll forces), are serving their role in this, as directed by the Zionists, CIA and MI-6 (CI-6).
Just hours after the now dead "truce" between Israel and Lebanon, a large scale breakout operation, likely involving 15 000 militants, was run from Idlib where HTS and the newly named SNA had been confined by the SAA and the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (AFRF). The initial breakout operation apparently involved a repeat of the consumer electronics attack which Mossad had run in Beirut a couple of months earlier.
Another immiediate component was Israel’s destruction of crossing points between Lebanon and Syria. This is to dually, prevent Hezbollah from assisting the SAA and to limit resupply logistics from Syria into Lebanon. It also traps Lebanese refugees in Lebanon.
Propositioned personnel ("sleeper cells") in Aleppo put on their scary dark outfits and took selfies in front of known monuments. These were amplified on social media to create panic.
The SAA withdrew from Aleppo having been partially surprised and choosing a better location on which to fight the Takfirs. The YPG moved into east Aleppo and to hold the major road junction north of Aleppo to reduce Turkish logistics to support the Takfirs.
The SAA set up defensive positions in and north of Hama. The SAA and Russian airforces began bombing concentrations of Takfirs on their excursion from Idlib. The Takfirs have entered Aleppo and begun heading south towards Hama. South of Aleppo and north of Hama they are in a large open valley plain, asking to meet Allah via the same airforces. The Russian/SAA airforces have destroyed a Takfir leadership compound in Idlib. HTS leader al-Julani may have been injured or killed in this attack.
An insurrection in southern Syria, close to Zionist occupied Palestine, was put down by local forces and the SAA.
The IRGC has forces in Syria, monitoring and coordinating the weapons production facilities and assisting the SAA. At least one of the Iraqi PMU units is reportedly coming to Syria's aid.
The current state of the conflict is fluid and heavily clouded in the fog of war.
Russia is supplying intelligence and air power. Iran via the IRGC will also share intelligence and provide logistics and soldiers. Some of the Iraqi PMUs will assist the SAA in defending Syria, likely to be commanded by joint Iraqi/IRGC leadership. Ansar Allah are too remote, and will continue to attack Israel to protest the genocide, and US and UK naval vessels in response to the US and UK declaring war on Yemen.
Civil society in the region, often termed the “Arab street” well understands what is happening. Just as the genocide in Palestine and the inhumane bombing of Beirut served to swell the ranks of Hamas and Hezbollah, so will the Takfiri insurgency in Syria swell the ranks of both and likely the Iraqi PMUs. Revered Iraqi Shia cleric al Sistani could issue a fatwa, in the unlikely circumstance that additional soldiers are required.
Motives
The current restart of the SDW is a collaboration between the US neocons, Zionists and Sultan Erdogan facilitated by CI-6. These groups would still love to see Syrian President al Assad removed from power. The chances of that are close to non-existent, but the chaos is useful for several purposes. For the Israeli Zionists a distraction from their ongoing genocide in Gaza is useful in itself.
The conflict reduces Syria's ability to support the Axis of Resistance. The neocons are giving Iran and Russia a minor headache. The Kurds are both removing Sunni zealots and Turkish influence from their territories and, by helping the SAA, raising their chances of securing autonomous local rule over areas in northeastern Syria. The Iraqi PMUs understand the Zionist influence behind the chaos and are opposing that. If they have opportunity and permission to attack occupying US forces, the will likely take it.
The wannabe Sultan, even if he does not achieve any annexation, does want many of the more than 2 million Syrian refugees in Türkiye to return. Due to the previous settlement he was required to manage Idlib, which is full of these Takfirs. Unleashing them means that they will destabilize Syria, fight the Kurds, make the US and Zionists happy and as as result create a different settlement opportunity. That settlement may enable him to repatriate many of the Syrian refugees in Türkiye, especially if many of the Takfirs have been killed. Do not make the mistake thinking that Erdogan cares one whit about HTS or other Takfirs. They are pawns.
He is also again asking the US for F-35s, which is a ploy to ingratiate himself with the US military industrial complex, and potentially the incoming Trump administration.
Opportunities
The conflict provides another useful opportunity for the Russian and Iranian forces to interoperate. This time, the two nations have a closer political alliance than when they last fought the Takfirs from 2016 to 2020. Both understand the direction of the incoming Trump administration, stuffed with Zionists.
For the Zio-cons this creates a backdrop which they can use to encourage the new US administration to support the Zionists. "Look! The Russians and the Iranians are cooperating!"
Pictures
The simplest view of this wanton violence is the Western military intelligence agencies allied with the Zionists fighting Iran and the Axis.
This simplistic view needs to be augmented by adding Türkiye as an independent party which is playing with against both. Next add the anti-Turks, the Kurds, who are also playing to their advantage on a field in which the strengths of the major players is changing. Then add the Iraqi, who have their own interests. Finally, Hezbollah have their interests, though these are strongly allied with Iran's. It is a three sided conflict, but in three dimensions. A tetrahedron of conflicting purposes.
At its core, there are three problems: the Israeli Zionists, the Kurds and the wannabe Sultan. What is happening is an opportunist pressure release valve manifesting as two very nasty militia running amok in Syria, weakened by a decade of US "Caesar" sanctions.
As usual, the civilians in Syria are suffering.
