Update 2023-03-29: A new interview by Russel Brand with Graham Hancock has been added to sources.
Introduction
I have been following the Ukraine crisis for well over three years and have been publishing about it for at least 15 months. The situation is now such that I am tearing my hair out with annoyance at the intransicence of both sides, though more so with the continued beligerence of the USA/NATO and the puppet President of Ukraine. It all came beautifully to a media crowning with the Ukraine president having created the death of 120 000+ of his armed forces and civilians being named by Time magazine as "Person of the Year". He is added to their “of the year” naming of Adolf Hitler, Boris Yetsin, You and Vladimir Putin. Take what you wish from this Timing.
I have reached a very dangerous position wherein I believe that I understand most of what is being said. So annoyed am I by this whole situation, rather than performing deeper research I have largely given up and decided to look at narrower and wider fields. This can be seen in recent publications on how to protect persons attacked by military intelligence groups, particularly in data control, or the two part series on Astronomy.
This article is another delve into the wider perspective.
The Joy of Reading and Thought
Recently, Caitlin Johnstone published an article in which she declared that she does not want to be a part of the further projections of life in space or on other planets. Caitlin has at least two great skills, the quality of her writing and "tapping into the Zeitgeist" to fish out ideas which people are feeling and have yet to express.
Two issues are regularly declared as the biggest threats to the current mode of human civilization: Climate Distaster and Nuclear Distaster. Some may have reservation about the Climate topic and some even with the Nuclear topic. My personal view is they are both serious. The only real distinction is when they become disasterous. The remainder of this article presents a third "impending" cataclysm and asks how humanity can consider them.
The "Comet Group"
Graham Hancock has been advertising a new book. It could be considered a third toe in the water for his desire to identify a "Lost Civilization" of advanced understanding; an Atlantis. While this is an interesting concept, in the discussions and a presentation which I watched he raises a very interesting hypothesis. This concept is being explored by 60+ "mainstream" scientists called the "Comet Group".
The hypothesis is that around 12 000 years ago one or several impacts occured in the northern hemisphere on the north American icesheets and possibly also Greenland. These impacts generated a "flood" which caused devastating damage to many regions The core evidence for the event replicates that of the long resisted but currently accepted end of the reign of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. The difference is the scale of time; 12 000 years ago as opposed to 65 000 000.
The commonality is a layer of rock, a strata, in the geological record which contains both a rare element (Iridium) and a rare product (nano-diamonds). In the KT boundary layer, which is a core component of the 'end of dinosaur' accepted belief, both are present. The same now appears true for the 12 000 years ago "comet" impact.
I have no interest in an "Atlantis" but a strong interest in the geoological record. Of key interest to me is that Hancock is proposing that cataclysms have had significant influence on the development of humanity. These significant "visitations" upon the Earth by extra-terrestrial clumps of rock and/or ice are extremely common, but the larger are more rare. The dinosaur ending version was some rock/metal conglomerate of over a kilometer across (or more) which impacted off the Yucatán Peninsula.
Hancock quotes the damage inflicted upon Jupiter when a sizeable comet impacted; 300 x (unit). The current damage (not radiation, just damage in energy) for all nuclear weapons on Earth is 6.6 x (unit). We understand that if all nuclear weapons are lanuched and detonate we can destroy the surface of our beautiful planet many times over. Jupiter is an entirely different beast, comprising 5/7ths of all non-stellar mass in our Solar system. Jupiter was perhaps a little annoyed, but unperturbed. If this event had occured on Earth in would have been "end or dinosaurs" part II; the end of us and most other surface life.
Surveys for exoplanets have shown that gas giants like Jupiter often occur close to the star. Our solar system is a little unusual in this regard. We have this insanely massive gas giant, Jupiter, orbiting at 5 AU from our star. An AU is the mean distrance of the Earth from the Sun with Mercury at 0.4, Venus and 0.7, Mars at 1.4 and the Asteroid Belt at 2.5. The "edge" of the Solar system is about 120 Au, with the last major feature, the Kuiper Belt averaging at 50 AU. Thus, Jupiter is protecting a very small inner-inner Solar system from large bodies whose orbits may intrude into this inner space. Thank you, Jupiter.
Taurid Meteor Stream
We exist in a space with a crazy balance. Jupiter is doing us a favour, and so is the Sun, somewhat. The problem with the Sun are known as "Sun Spots" which are massive coronal ejections flinging mind blowing amounts of ionic matter (ionic == has an electric charge) into the system. We are very close to the Sun and thus are asking to be splatted by this. Our defence is our magnetic field which traps and deflects these charged particle storms, mostly. Despite Jupiter's guardian role our exquisite planet is constantly impacted by small meteorites and occassionally large ones.
The Earth is in a beautiful but not risk free space
During Hancock's exploration looking for his "Atlantis" he mentions an astronomical challenge which the Earth faces. It is imporant to put this in perspective. The Earth will be fine, though a little damaged, and life is extremely unlikely to be extinguished. However, humans are likely to become extinct or seriously impacted as a species, depending on how large the impacting object is.
Hancock concludes that if an impact similar to that which the "Comet Group" is working on to validate from 12 000 years ago re-occurs it will be the "western/advanced" civilizations which will perish. Humanity, if it survives, will be survived by the Bushmen of the Kalahari, the indigenous tribes of the Amazon, the Australian Aborigines living in Arnhem Land, the indigenous peoples of the highlands of Papua New Guinea and other hunter-gathers. They are in the business of survival and us "westerners" are not.
The meteor stream was first observed in the consellation of Torus (The Bull), thus the name "Taurid Meteor Stream". It was thought to have originally been a very large commet which through its obits was repeatedly heats by the Sun and finally broke up realeasing its rocky/metalic parts over time. The problem is that our Earth's orbit crosses the meteor stream's orbit each November and May.
"Space" is big; really big. So the chances of an impact are small. But, all it takes is one large size meteorite and we're all freezing and dying of hunger in "the west". This is the risk.
Effort is being made to identify the elements of the meteor stream by Astronomers. I cannot report their current understanding of coverage of knowledge of the elements of the meteor stream. However, recently (a decade or two ago) the Earth was narrowly missed (in astronomical senses of 'narrow') by a major element of this threat stream.
Times and Troubles
The question I ask is how should humanity deal with these threats of Climate, Nuclear or Meteoric Disaster?
In the end, the war in Ukraine will end. People have died, more will die and other people will have made money or achieved power from it. This is all pocket change compared to the three cataclyms mentioned.
These three challenges are not an exhaustive list.
Should we not be learning how to control impending cataclysms? Should we not be elimiating them when they are understood? Should we not be looking for more?
To return to Caitlin Johnstone's article, there is a tension in colonising our Solar system. First of all, we can't do it. We don't have the energy resources. But, secondly it is an extremely fragile pursuit. Recall, one wants an Atmosphere and a Magnetic Field. Mars has almost no atmosphere and the same with magnetic field. The same is true of any "space based habitat".
We do have one fantastic spaceship.
We are all born on it.
