Warning
We really get into the "weeds" of corruption and influence here. There are two ways to approach this. Either one has done years of unspoken history research, or one uses the interview upon which this article focuses as a beginning for that research.
Naming Names
Whitney Webb is a young tenacious historian/investigative reporter and mother. She has spent years digging into the sex blackmail ring centered around Jeffrey Epstein. In so doing she has sought to identify the roots of the network which facilitated Epstein and his assistant Gislaine Maxwell, and her family.
Unsurprisingly these roots lead to organised crime, intelligence agencies, bankers and wealthy families. In Episode 37 of her podcast (see sources) she outlines the contents of her upcoming book "One Nation Under Blackmail" in which she documents these years of research.
“One Nation Under Blackmail” is structured in two parts with the first 10 chapters covering the period from World War II until the era of Epstein beginning in the 1990s. The second half from chapters 11 to 21 takes us from the 1990s to the present. The volume weighs in at around 800 pages, not including citations.
Webb’s book will become a classic: a reference volume on a process by which institutions of power and influence were corrupted to serve actors with neither allegiance to national nor constitutional norms, but pure power.
Her intention with the book is to show that, as opposed to accepted narrative, Epstein is not a "one off" "bad apple" but the product of a multi-generational network of operators which does not fit into a single organisation. "The Enterprise", this network, is essentially a business which seeks power, influence and profit by means fair or foul, whichever are more effective.
As she first used the term, this author's subconscious instantly launched "Iran-Contra" to the frontal cortex, and sure enough, some minutes later Whitney raises the scandal as an example, an episode even, in the history of the network. The network is not the CIA or Mossad, or the National Crime Syndicate or a single drug cartel or a gun running operation. It is all of these things. Its personnel are connected with drug and gun running, blackmail, election rigging, media and any other, and sometimes entirely legitimate, activities which increase its power and profits. As Whitney states, they care not one whit about laws or constitutions or governments or nations. This is about raw power.
If one has read Webb's reporting one is familiar with the dizzying array of names, dates and places she cites to document her research. This podcast episode is no exception. An encyclopedia of persons and organisations is opened going back to the middle of the second world war. In fact, some of the USA families involved go back to the "China Trade", the drug running of opium into China. Names of organisations less familiar than they should be, like the Office of Strategic Services which was the forerunner of the CIA, appear in the early history of The Enterprise. Other names also appear, like Ted Shackley and William Casey who may be familiar to those interested in elements of history less published.
Webb informs us that she opens the book with a quote from a CIA whistleblower whose name was unknown to this author, Bruce Hemmings. The quote she uses is:
Who are these people? They are the group that are popularly called The Enterprise. They are in and outside the CIA. They are mostly right wing Republicans but you will find a mix of Democrats, mercenaries, ex-officio Mafia and opportunists within the group. They are CEOs. They are bankers. They are presidents. They own airlines. They own national television networks. They own 6 of the 7 video documentary companies of Washington D.C. and they do not give a damn about the law of the constitution or the Congress of the oversight committees except as something to be subverted and manipulated and lied to.
They abhor sunlight and they love darkness. They deal in innuendo and character assassination and planted stories. ... They burn and shred files if caught. They commit perjury and when caught, have guaranteed sinecures with large US corporations. If you let them, they will take over not only the CIA, but the entire government and the world, cutting off dissent, free speech, free media. And they will cut a deal with anyone from Mafia, to Saddam Hussein if it means more power and money. They stole $600 billion from the Savings and Loans and then diverted our attention to the Iraqis. They are ripping off America at a rate never before seen in history. They flooded our country with drugs from Central America during the 1980's, cut deals with Harro in Mexico, Noreiga in Panama and the Medellin and Cali cartels, and Castro, and recently the Red Mafia and the KGB. They ruin their detractors and they fear the truth. If they can, they will blackmail you. Sex. Drugs. Deals. Whatever it takes.
Webb's Web
Another character to grace Webb's cross-hairs is Adnan Khashoggi, the uncle of the recently murdered Saudi "journalist". Another young reporter of note, Ben Norton, recently provided a background on the murdered journalist which includes details of his uncle, and his role as an international arms trafficker.
Those who have investigated the Iran-Contra affair will have learned of the BCCI, the Bank of Credit and Commerce International. This joint effort by USA and Pakistani intelligence contains elements of Saudi and Israeli intelligence too. It wanders as a "deer in the headlights" across Whitney's radar. She associates this money laundering and finance scheme with the looting of Savings and Loans. Whitney declares that she does not go into much detail with the Savings and Loans scandal though recommends Pete Brewton, author of "The Mafia, CIA and George Bush", as the investigator who has done the most extensive research (see sources for an interview).
Whitney describes her objectives in covering the BCCI in the book. She tries to "thread the needle" of providing both an overview for those who are unfamiliar with the institution and its role in the Iran-Contra scandal, but also enough detail that persons already familiar with the "bank" learn new information. Unsurprisingly "it got a little long".
The role of Bill Clinton, and specifically the town of Mena, Arkansas, as a key component of the drug running component of Iran-Contra take the center of her cross-hairs as she transitions to the sex blackmail ring which emerges in the 1990's under Clinton's presidency. While the blackmail operations are a focus of some of the narrative, the greater issue of intelligence agencies, most specifically the CIA, funding covert operations "off the books" via drug running is also a strong focus. Garry Webb (no relation to Whitney to this author's knowledge) reported extensively on the CIA's supply of cocaine, and crack cocaine, into poorer communities of colour in southern California. Whitney acknowledges his research in her wider approach to "The Enterprise".
Indeed, Whitney's broad approach to the network, its origins and operations, connects a large body of "unspoken history". To blow one's mind, Whitney connects the precursor of the "Lolita Express" sex trafficking airline, Penn Central, "and its, like, linked to a company, that like involved the pilot that dropped one of the bombs on Hiroshima, and stuff".
Webb's research interconnects, via the sex trafficking blackmail operations, a network of extra-legal operators co-opting intelligence agencies, organized crime, banksters and wealthy families to control governments, both the USA's and others under its influence. Recent policy decisions by the EU over the conflict in Ukraine demonstrate self defeating actions, undermining economic and energy security. Which network has orchestrated this stupidity remains unclear. That it is organized is evident.
Before one slings the mud of corruption allegations offshore, one should understand the local state of affairs.
Daniel Sheehan
Over the course of this author’s study of power a guideline to finding useful voices has been formulated as:
Pay attention to reporters who have spent years in war zones, to retired military officers and retired diplomats, and to “cause lawyers”
Reporters who have spent years in war zones tend to have had the wool ripped away from their eyes. They begin to focus on hard truths. Retired military officers and diplomats are free to speak their minds due to their retirement. Cause lawyers are quite a different beast.
A cause lawyer is a lawyer who is concerned with the abuse of law and the preservation of constitutional restraints. The canonical USA example is Daniel Sheehan. The agreement he had with the law firm he joined was that for 50% of his time he would accept cases provided by the firm and strive to win them. The other 50% of his time would be used at his discretion. Mr Sheehan used this time and his considerable legal skill to pursue a series of landmark cases in the USA courts. He was the lawyer who exposed the Iran Contra affair. His struggle to find a plaintiff to use to launch the case is in itself a fascinating story.
The Iran Contra case is just one of many he has pursued to expose corruption and malfeasance by the USA government and its agencies.
Another largely unknown but earth shaking case is that of Karen Silkwood. Through this litigation Sheehan uncovered the mechanism by which the USA supplied Israel with weapons grade nuclear materials. This explains why it, and she are largely unknown.
As a compliment to the upcoming book by Whitney Webb, I recommend the videos of a 2012 lecture course delivered by Daniel Sheehan at the Romero Institute. During this course he visits key cases in USA legal history, for many of which he was the primary lawyer. While one must withstand a lawyer’s desire to tell “war stories”, one is receiving the information from a most authoritative source.
In sources below, the video series is provided, as is a link to the Romero Institute’s channel on youtube at which can be found later and equally interesting lecture courses given by Mr. Sheehan. His 2013 exploration of the forces which may have been behind the JFK assassination is also an excellent companion to independent research into the topic, most notably by James Douglas in “JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why it Matters”.
