The response by those in society with access to media columns was a uniform barrage of lizard-brained "Putin, Putin, Putin" trolling, ad hominem attacks on this distinguished person and really intellectually bankrupt ideological tirades by those who claimed to be "researchers" or "fellows" at think tanks. The newspapers derided him. Only one academic defended the issues that he raised and supported these concerns.
Those are the times we live in. Europe is now an idiocracy.
