Do you not think that the Russian attack on the European gas storage in Western Ukraine is a retaliation for the Ukrainian and European long range attacks on Russian oil & gas infrastructure a couple of weeks ago that cannot be repaired because it relies on parts and srevice blocked the the simultaneous imposition of the at latest tranche of EU sanctions on Russia?
The best explanation I can offer is in a general sense, provided by John Helmer. The "electric war", as he named it, contains within in it a battle in the Russian Security Council with Putin on one side and the Russian military on the other.
Destroying ALL of Ukraine's power storage, generation capacity and distribution networks is the fastest way to complete the SMO mission objective of the demilitarization of Ukraine. It would, however, also cause massive civilian harm.
Accordingly, elements of the campaign have been used at different phases of the war for varying purposes. The current policy, Helmer informed us a week or so ago, is to destroy all power within a rolling "demilitarized zone" type distance from the front lines. Exceptional attacks, like the one on the gas storage, have more political motives, exposing the Ukraine governments inability to protect essential assets.
I believe the gas storage attack dually targeted the Ukraine government and the EU commission. It was a big single finger to the EU.
Update:
Dima reports that the attacks on the gas transport in the Poltava region was to prevent the Ukrainians pumping gas back towards Kursk; a defensive measure. Makes sense. Thus, the western strikes can be seen as cover for this. The above analysis also holds. i.e all true at once.
Interesting reading!
